Kiva Container builds custom ESD packaging for companies that make high-reliability electronic components: hermetic packages, oscillators, custom semiconductors, PCBs, and circuit card assemblies. These parts are small, expensive, and static-sensitive, and many of them go into space, defense, and medical programs. We design the tray, build the tooling, form it, and make the box around it, all in one AS9100D-certified shop in Anaheim, CA.

A standard waffle pack or JEDEC tray works until your part has a lid, a seal ring, delicate leads, or a footprint nobody stocks. That’s where we come in. We build a thermoformed carrier matched to your part, in conductive or static-dissipative material, inside a conductive box built to your shipping spec.

Assorted ESD Packaging

What we build

  • Custom ESD trays and carriers. Thermoformed to your part’s geometry from conductive material, 0.020″ to 0.060″ thick, typically 10³ to 10⁵ ohms/sq. Pockets are designed around what can and can’t touch your part.
  • Clear static-dissipative trays and clamshells. 0.015″ to 0.035″ PVC (10⁶ to 10⁹ ohms/sq) for when inspectors need to see the part without opening the package.
  • Conductive corrugated plastic boxes, totes, and dividers. 3mm and 4mm, for work in process, kitting, and returnable shipping, with slotted dividers for boards and assemblies.
  • Conductive paper corrugated outers. 200 lb B-flute and E-flute double wall, for when the shipper needs to be recyclable paper.
  • Tray-in-box systems. A thermoformed ESD insert and a conductive corrugated outer, designed together and quoted together. Kiva is the only manufacturer converting both thermoformed and corrugated plastic packaging under one roof.
  • Printing and labeling. Part numbers, barcodes, and handling marks, printed in-house.

Full material specs are on our ESD Packaging page.

Parts we package

  • Hermetic packages: ceramic-to-metal seal (CTMS), glass-to-metal seal (GTMS), and HTCC
  • Crystal oscillators and timing devices
  • Custom semiconductors and integrated circuits
  • Hermetically sealed electromechanical relays
  • PCBs and circuit card assemblies
  • Ultra high density interconnect (UHDI) flex circuits
  • Photodiodes, custom LEDs, and opto-electronic sensors
  • Fiber-optic cabling and connection components

Why component makers work with Kiva

  • AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015. Our quality system supports the lot traceability and documentation that aerospace, space, and defense programs require.
  • ESD packaging since the early 1990s. We match your ESD control program and confirm material resistivity against your spec before production.
  • Tooling built in-house. We design and build tray tooling ourselves, so a fit change doesn’t wait on an outside toolmaker.
  • Clean surfaces when you need them. Class A laminated surfaces (Tyvek, Spunguard, brushed polyester) for contamination-sensitive handling.
  • Runs sized to your program. We build at the quantities hi-rel programs actually order.

How a project works

  1. Send us a part, a drawing, or a STEP file, and tell us how it ships and how many trips it makes.
  2. We design the tray or carrier and the box around it.
  3. We build the tooling in-house and send sample parts for a fit check.
  4. Production runs under our AS9100D quality system.

Custom thermoformed trays typically take 3 to 5 weeks, including the tool build.

Frequently Asked Questions

What packaging do semiconductor and hi-rel component makers use to ship parts?

Most ship in ESD-safe trays or carriers that hold each part in its own pocket, inside a conductive outer box. Standard waffle packs and JEDEC trays cover common footprints. Parts with unusual shapes, lids, or leads usually need a custom thermoformed tray. Kiva Container builds both the custom tray and the outer box in Anaheim, CA.

Can Kiva Container make a custom tray when a JEDEC tray or waffle pack doesn't fit our part?

Yes. We thermoform trays to your part’s geometry in conductive or static-dissipative material. Send a part, drawing, or STEP file, and we’ll design pockets around what can and can’t touch the part, including leads, lids, and seal rings.

Does Kiva Container make ESD packaging for hermetic packages?

Yes. We package ceramic-to-metal seal (CTMS), glass-to-metal seal (GTMS), and HTCC hermetic packages, along with hermetically sealed relays. Trays are formed from conductive polymer, and the outer box can be conductive corrugated plastic or conductive paper corrugated.

What's the difference between conductive and static-dissipative trays?

Conductive trays (about 10³ to 10⁵ ohms/sq) drain charge fast and are the usual choice for sensitive components. Static-dissipative material (10⁶ to 10⁹ ohms/sq) drains it more slowly. We offer it in clear PVC when parts need to be visible for inspection. Your ESD control plan usually decides which one you need.

Is Kiva Container AS9100 certified for aerospace and space component packaging?

Yes. Kiva Container is AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015 certified. Our quality system supports the lot traceability and documentation that aerospace, space, and defense programs require from packaging suppliers.

Can you package PCBs and circuit card assemblies?

Yes. We build conductive corrugated plastic boxes and totes with slotted dividers that hold boards on edge. For assemblies that need to lie flat or be located by their components, we build thermoformed carriers. Both can be printed with part numbers and barcodes.

How long does it take to get custom ESD trays?

Custom thermoformed trays typically take 3 to 5 weeks, including the tool build. Corrugated plastic boxes and dividers that run on existing dies can often ship in 1 to 2 weeks. Call 714-630-3850 for a quote on your part.
